Find and fix keyword cannibalization with Search Console and AI
When two of your pages compete for the same search, neither ranks as well as one would. How to find them in Search Console and decide what to do.
What it is
Keyword cannibalization is when two or more of your pages each get a real share of Google's impressions for the same query. Google keeps switching between them, links and relevance are split, and often neither reaches the position one strong page would.
Find it
With Search Console connected, ask your AI. On Pro and Agency it uses gsc_cannibalization, which lists every query where your pages share impressions, with each page's clicks, impressions, share and position. On Starter it gets the same from gsc_search_analytics grouped by query and page.
Decide per query
- Merge: the pages say the same thing. Keep the stronger one, fold the useful parts of the other into it, and 301 the weaker URL to it.
- Differentiate: the pages serve different intents (a guide and a product page). Retarget the weaker one at its own query, in its title, headings and text.
- Canonicalize: near-duplicates such as filtered categories or product variants. Point the canonical at the main version.
- Link: whatever you choose, link from the other pages to the one that should rank, with the query in the anchor text.
Let your AI do the work
Redirects and canonical settings are server changes: your AI makes them one at a time with your approval and tests each. Rewritten titles and merged texts are saved as drafts for you to review. Check the same queries again in four to six weeks; Search Console needs time to settle.
